Maleic anhydride grafted resins for multilayer packaging film applications.

Barrier films protect the content like food such as meat, fresh pasta and/or cheese. Due to the gas barrier the oxygen can not penetrate through the film and spoil the content.Multilayer barrier films are extruded by blown and cast film extrusion technology up to 11-layers and more. Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) is a polar resin that has a high oxygen barrier. In order to coextrude EVOH with apolar resins such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) a so-called tie layer resin is needed between the EVOH-layer and PE-layer (or PP-layer) to secure a good adhesion between the layers and to avoid delamination.Maleated resins are maleic anhydride grafted resins that are manufactured by twin screw extrusion also known as reactive extrusion. Maleated resins are used as tie layer resin in multilayer barrier films. The paper will present the manufacturing of tie-layer resins, their applications and requirements for film packaging and their future developments.
