Polymer alloy is a composite system composed of two or more than two polymeric materials. ABS/PET is one of them used as a typical polymer alloy materials.

(1)ABS is an engineering plastic of which the advantages are the excellent properties such as high impact strength, chemical resistance, easy processing, good dimensional stability and surface gloss, whereas the disadvantages are relatively bad mechanical property, poor durability and solubility, and low thermal deformation temperature. On the other hand, PET possesses good mechanical, chemical resistance and thermal stability, while the impact resistance is poor.

(2)Since the physical mixture of ABS and PET is not compatible due to the different crystallization process and solubility parameters, finding the proper compatibilizers that can control the interfacial force between two different polymers and enhance the compatibility of the mixtures would be one of the major factors to be often used the ABS/PET alloy in the industrial field.

(3)Since MAH reacts with PET to achieve improved compatibility, maleic anhydride (MAH) modified styrene-co-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer, which is SMA, is widely used as compatibilizer in the field of scientific research and industrial application.[6] In addition, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) modified SAN copolymer, which is SAG, is also used for an epoxy reactive compatibilizer; SAG is non-toxic, non-corrosive and eco-friendly material.
